Ratmalana takes its name from the Ratmal flower (Ixora coccinea) which as its Sinhala name suggests is red-hued. It is a native of India and Sri Lanka and much used in native medicine.
Although once a quite suburb in the outskirts of Colombo, it was during British times traversed by the Galle Road which brought it more life. In the immediate post-independence era it became an industrial town of sorts and today we find a lot of factories based here including Bata shoe factory, Maliban biscuit factory and Woodlands ice cream plant.
Today it is both a commercial as well as residential area with plenty of quiet neghbourhoods, busy marketplaces, restaurants and even a long stretch of beach and a turtle hatchery bordering on Mount Lavinia.
